Podcast 32: RESURRECT DEAD: THE MYSTERY OF THE TOYNBEE TILES

ttt

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

For more than 25 years, someone has been placing mysterious tiles on the busiest streets in New York, Philadelphia, and other east coast cities – as far south as Brazil.

They all bear some variation of this message:

Toynbee Idea
In Kubrick’s 2001
Resurrect Dead
On Planet Jupiter

Who’s been doing this? How? Why?

And what does all of this have to do with playwright David Mamet?

In this episode, we lose our way in the rabbit hole, and finally find our way out again. Maybe. Or maybe we’re still in it and we just don’t realize it.

As we mention in the podcast, we highly recommend you listen to the first part, then take a break and go watch the film. Come back after you’re done watching and listen to the rest of the podcast.

Here are some of the things we mention in the episode. You’ll be needing all of it:

WHAT DID WE THINK?

This one had us completely obsessed.

This story took over our week.

Every now and then, a story is so compelling, so tantalizing, that it becomes more than a film, more than a podcast episode. This one lives on in our psyches, and will probably never leave. What does it mean? Is the mystery resolved? Is there in fact a greater mystery happening here?

This is one of the strongest films we’ve reviewed, and is in fact Adam’s favorite so far. He gives it a 5 (out of 5). John gives it a 4, but if his suspicions about the film turn out to be correct, he’s going to make it a 6 – which breaks the scale.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
