I was just listening to a piece on BBC radio today about robotic pets – used in hospital settings and the like to aid peoples emotional well being in stressful times.
I have to say it made me cringe but before I’d given it a chance to sink in. The 80s and 90s film era using robotic puppetry seems to spring to mind for many I imagine. Which might be a big part of the ‘turn off’. But perhaps we are all hung up on the aesthetics and tactility issues when trying to replicate this, as you say, meat puppet that we are.
Perhaps in the future robosexuality wont simply be a traditional spouse replacement. Imagine a new era where we will all pansexual. We will all be non gender specific. Imagine, we will need to navigate tricky conversations to find out what, ahem, ‘equipment’ our potential partners even have to rectify ‘mechanical’ related issues down the line.
With all this in mind why on earth would robosexual partners even need to be humanoid, if we don’t identify with sex, gender or (for want of a better word) sentience, we might choose to marry a really nice cushion, or a giant sponge. Something that can both have a great personality yet be warm and comforting in it’s own unique way.
